STD Symptoms in Men

Be it any type of sexual activity, vaginal, oral or anal, all of them bear the risk of transmitting infection known as a sexually transmitted disease (STD). The infection can also be spread through sharing sexual devices such as vibrators or any other sex toys. The following are some of the most common STD symptoms in men along with the disease.

Common STD Symptoms in Men

Chlamydia
Common symptoms of this bacterial infection of the genital tract include painful urination, discharge from the penis and pain in the testicles. Lower abdominal pain also occurs due to prolong irritation and so does inflammation of the eyes and skin lesions. These STD symptoms in men do not show up at an early stage as the incubation period (the period between infection and the appearance of symptoms of the disease) of chlamydia is about 1-3 weeks. Read more on chlamydia.

Gonorrhea
This is another STD of the genital tract. The incubation period is 2-10 days and the common STD symptoms in males, in this case are discharge from the penis which is thick, cloudy or bloody, sensation of sharp pain during urinating and frequent urination, and pain during sexual intercourse. Gonorrhea is also known to show no symptoms in many cases. More on gonorrhea symptoms.

Genital Herpes
A type of the herpes simplex virus (HSV) is responsible for causing the infection known as the genital herpes. In most cases, men might be carrying this virus but may not be aware if it. This is because the disease is generally asymptomatic (having no symptoms of illness or disease). Even if any symptoms do occur, they can be so mild that they often go unnoticed. Small, red bumps may be noticed in the genital and anal areas. The affected person may experience pain or itching sensation in the genital area, inner thighs and buttocks.

Syphilis
Symptoms during an early (primary) stage of syphilis include sore on the genitals or rectum and swelling of the glands in the groin. Secondary stage symptoms are headaches, muscle aches, and tiredness and pains, sickness, loss of appetite and fever in some cases. It can also include dark red skin rashes, sore throat, patchy hair loss and weight loss. After this stage of syphilis comes the latent stage, wherein, the affected person shows no symptoms but the infection is still present in the body. The final or the tertiary stage has symptoms of painful ulcers on the skin, lesions on ligaments, joints and bones. Apart from causing such STD symptoms in men, syphilis can also result in blindness, paralysis, insanity and in extreme cases, even death.

Hepatitis
About 30% of people affected with Hepatitis have no symptoms. The other lot which are, may experience fatigue, nausea and vomiting, poor appetite, mild fever, pain in muscles and joints, stomach pain and itching. Dark-colored urine and pale bowel movements, abdominal pain or discomfort and jaundice (yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes caused by an accumulation of bile pigment (bilirubin) in the blood) are also some of the most probable STD symptoms in men with Hepatitis. Genital Warts [Human Papillomavirus (HPV)]
Initial STD symptoms in men affected by genital warts may be small, hard bumps on the penis and around the anus. These bumps are usually painless and sometimes hard to see. At a later stage, these bumps take on a cauliflower-like appearance. Itching or discomfort in your genital area is also a symptom of genital warts. This infection has also been known to be asymptomatic in many cases.

HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) and AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome)
Symptoms might not show up for about 10 years or more. Fever, headache, fatigue, rapid weight loss and rashs are the early STD symptoms in men and women affected by HIV/AIDS. Frequent yeast infections (in the mouth), swollen lymph nodes, diarrhea, blotches on or under the skin or inside the mouth (brown, red or purple in color) are some of the symptoms. These blotches may appear on the nose and the eyelids also. Cough and shortness of breath, shaking chills and persistent headaches are the other symptoms of a later stage.

These were the most common STD symptoms in men. Symptoms of an STD in men and women must immediately be informed to the doctor. Some of the symptoms can easily be done away with, while some require long-term treatment. Although no prevention is 100% safe, however, preventive methods such as using condoms reduce the chances of most infections being transmitted from an infected partner.
